So this month we not only celebrate Thanksgiving but it’s also a recognized celebration for those who have no boss. That’s right, it’s National Entrepreneurship Month. Thanks, President Obama.
But we do have a boss. Actually, bosses. Those are our customers/clients. But that’s not what this post is about. I want to talk about being an entrepreneur aka blogger or online content creator. With the flood of “experts” out there you are probably thinking you can leave your fulltime job and start making money immediately. Well….let’s be real. Being a fulltime blogger is possible as long as you have the right guidance and strategic effort.
To make it a reality follow these 7 steps before becoming a fulltime blogger:
- Have savings for at least 6 months or more.
- Build your customer base at least 3-6 months prior to launching your business.
- Understand sales funnels.
- Have your admin/backend in place.
- Build your email list.
- Attend a conference to learn more about your industry and make some connections.
- Create an accountability circle such as the Houston African American Bloggers Association.
You probably thought I would say something else like create pretty graphics or have a large online following. Or even get on Periscope or Facebook Live 3 times a day. Nope. That doesn’t always translate to dollars.
If you plan to become a fulltime blogger or is one and struggling, then I highly suggest you sit down and think this through. There are millions of blogs online. What will make you stand out? Why would (or do) people come to you? Why would (or do) people pay you? And being knowledgeable is not enough. Trust me, I know.
If you are thinking about becoming a fulltime blogger or just make money blogging and lack one of the seven steps above, then join the Houston African American Bloggers Association or another supportive, training based blog community.
